Draft day is finally here! One of my favorite parts of the year is back with the 2024 NFL Draft slated to begin tonight in Detroit, Michigan at 8 P.M. This year could be one of the most unpredictable and intriguing drafts we have seen in a long time. Mock drafts have been all over the place and the rumors of teams trying to trade up and down have begun to pick up even more steam. We could also see a record of Quarterbacks taken as QBs have only been taken 1-3 in that order, three times in NFL history and we have never seen quarterbacks taken with the first four picks in a draft. This year we have a ton of first-round depth at Offensive Line and Wide Reciever with potentially a flurry of quarterbacks in the top 10. A very explosive, offensive draft class that could set the record for offensive players taken in round one (Previously 19) so lets dive in…
Pick 1: Chicago Bears
Caleb Williams- QB USC
6’1- 210 lbs
Although I am a huge fan of this year’s QB class, Caleb Williams is the best of the bunch. His tape from 2022 was elite and nothing he did this past year would have me souring on the potential #1 pick. He accounted for 52 touchdowns with a 66.6% completion percentage in 2022 and was top 10 in passing yards, QBR, yards per attempt, and throws over 20 yards. He can extend plays as well as any quarterback I have seen and does it while keeping his eyes downfield to make big plays with his arm. Williams has 120 Touchdowns to just 14 interceptions in the last 3 years of play. His defense let him down at USC In 2023. The defense finished 116th in the FBS in total defense, giving up an average of 432.8 yards per game. Their scoring defense ranked even lower at 118, yielding an average of 34.38 points allowed per game. The character issue in reports couldn’t be more off. Teammates and fans in Chicago will love Caleb Williams. Williams is only 6’1, a smaller size for a QB in the NFL but we have seen that not be an issue for teams sitting at the top of the draft (Young, Mayfield, and Murray all selected #1).
Pick 2: Washington Commanders
Jayden Daniels- QB LSU
6’4- 210 lbs
Jayden Daniels has elevated his draft stock substantially since transferring to LSU from Arizona State. He put himself on the map with a good season in 2022 and improved even more in 2023. Daniels could be the best pocket passer and most mobile quarterback in the class. He throws a phenomenal deep ball and has the highest completion percentage of passes thrown over 20 yards in the highest in last 10 years (67%). He threw 40 touchdowns to just 4 interceptions last season and scrambled for over 700 yards on the ground. I like the comparison to former Eagle Randall Cunnigham in his dual-threat ability. He will have to learn how to avoid taking hits at the next level with his smaller frame but with his speed and agility, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. A perfect 1-B to Caleb Williams as the 1-A of this quarterback class.
Pick 3: New England Patriots
Drake Maye- QB UNC
6’4- 223 lbs
Eliot Wolf will serve as the primary draft man for New England for the first time in 2024 now that Bill Belichick is no longer in Foxborough. There has been a lot of speculation about what the Patriots could do at #3 in recent weeks. Some people believe the team is not ready for a young quarterback as constructed and others think it's an easy choice. I believe in the latter. New England can’t get cute here and they need to take the next best quarterback available. Given the way the board is likely to fall that guy is Drake Maye. Maye was fantastic in his interviews with teams and speaking publicly at the combine. He comes from a family of athletes with his dad playing Quarterback at UNC and his two brothers winning National Championships in Basketball and Baseball in college. He has a rocket arm and great size at 6’4 230 lbs. He is also more mobile than you think, able to extend plays and throw well on the run. Similarly to Williams, Maye's best tape comes from 2022 when he was the ACC Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and Offensive and Overall Rookie of the Year in the ACC. The only other player to win all four awards since Jameis Winston at Florida State. In 2023, Maye lost his best playmakers (Including Josh Downs from the Colts) and played behind a very poor offensive line. You can see in the film he tried to force some things due to the lack of talent around him but won’t have to worry about that at next level. He does have some raw things to cleanup in footwork and decision-making but to me possesses all the tools to be a great NFL quarterback. Don’t get cute New England….
Pick 4: Arizona Cardinals
Marvin Harrison Jr- WR OSU
6’3 209 lbs
One of my favorite players in college football over the last few years, Marvin Harrison Jr is finally able to leap to the NFL. Harrison has size and speed you can’t teach paired with natural instincts and great hands. He. plays with physicality and turns 50/50 balls into 70/30 balls. He has a rare combination of size, speed, and physicality. If a team with a stable quarterback room was picking #1 I would have Harrison as the pick. In recent weeks some teams have moved Nabers and Odunze closer to Harrison in their rankings but to me it’s clear who the best wide receiver in the class is. I have Harrison as my 2nd ranked prospect on my big board and any team that leaves the draft with him has a new WR1.
Pick 5: Los Angeles Chargers Trade with MINN (Pick 11 and Future Picks)
MINN selects JJ McCarthy- QB Michigan
6’2 219 lbs
This could be where the draft starts. The Giants an Vikings have both linked to trading up for Quarterbacks and the way the board falls could determine how it ends up. In this scenario, it's the Vikings using their two first-round picks to move up to #5 to select Michigan Quarterback JJ McCarthy. I have not been as high on McCarthy as others during the draft process but you can’t debate the noise surrounding him. McCarthy went 27-1 as a starter at Michigan and is coming off an undefeated National Championship in 23-24. He played in a pro-style offense at Michigan which should help him translate quickly to the NFL. The issue with McCarthy isn’t leadership, athleticism, or winning but rather has to do with what he was asked to do at Michigan in Harbuagh’s offense. Which wasn't too much… The Wolverines never really relied on him to make the big play and in going over throws from all quarterbacks in 2023-24 he has about 40 minutes of less film. McCarthy did not throw as much as his fellow quarterbacks in the class but that doesn’t mean he can’t be successful. We will have to see at the next level but his former coach helps him land in a great spot for a young quarterback in Minnesota here.
Pick 6: New York Giants
Malik Nabers- WR LSU
6’0 199 lbs
The Giants unable to trade up here and get their quarterback will pivot to potentially the most explosive player in the draft in Malik Nabers. Nabers was exceptional last year in one of the most dynamic offenses in the country alongside Jayden Daniels and Brian Thomas Jr. Nabers ran a lightning-fast 4.35 forty-yard dash at his pro day and displayed a 42-inch vertical. He was the top receiver to Heisman winner Jayden Daniels and should make an immediate impact. The Giants haven’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since OBJ in 2018, a much-needed player for the Giants if they can’t find the quarterback.
Pick 7: Tennessee Titans
Joe Alt- OT ND
6’8 321 lbs
Joe Alt, in my opinion, is the best Offensive Lineman in the draft and I can see him going as high as pick 5 if the Chargers stay put in round one. His father was a Tackle for the Kansas Chiefs and made two Pro Bowls after being a first-round pick in 1984. Joe is a former Tight End coming out of high school so you can see the athleticism and other traits that make him special on tape. He’s powerful in the run game and quick enough to get to the next level. He’s got long arms to keep pass rushers at length and is agile enough to play on either side of the line. He rarely was called for penalties at ND and has a high football IQ. I think a big win if the Titans look to solidify their O-Line.
Pick 8: Atlanta Falcons
Dallas Turner- Edge Alabama
6’3 247 lbs
Dallas Turner was second fiddle to Will Anderson last season for that Alabama defensive front. No shame in that, as Anderson was taken third in last year's draft by the Texans. The question was how he would fare as the guy for opposing offenses to scheme against and he answered the call. Turner has rare size and speed for an edge rusher collecting 10 sacks and 14.5 tackled for loss. At the combine, he shocked the building in Indy when he ran a 4.46 at 250 pounds while also jumping 40.5 inches on the vertical. Insane numbers and he has the tape to go with it. One of the quickest first steps off the edge you’ll see and if the motor comes along with it for Turner he could be a nightmare for quarterbacks early in his career.
Pick 9: Chicago Bears
Rome Odunze- WR Washington
6’3 212 lbs
To me, this would be a dream scenario for the Bears. Yes, they did get DJ Moore last season and Keenan Allen this offseason but Odunze is too good to pass up. I have him as my number 2 pass catcher in the class behind Harrison Jr. Odunze is silky smooth with elite contested catch ability and body control. He constantly found ways to get open even as the #1 option for opposing defenses. He has the size at 6’3, speed, and route running ability to be a deadly weapon for Caleb Williams and the Bears. Not to mention, the two were already seen throwing together this week at a Special Olympics event the two participated in. Odunze also has the toughness, even suffering a broken rib and punctured lung this season, and returned a week later to play against Oregon.
Pick 10: New York Jets
Brock Bowers- TE Georgia
6’3 243 lbs
The Jets, it seems, will be forever linked to Offensive Linemen with how poorly that facet of the game has been for the franchise in recent years. But here at pick 10 I think they should go with the #8 ranked player on my board and that's Brock Bowers. Bowers is an elite prospect as an offensive “weapon.” That is the key for Bowers, he can do it all. It’s rare to find a Tight End or even pass catcher with his combination of size, speed, acceleration, hands, and football IQ. He even carried the ball as a runner, scoring five rushing touchdowns. Bowers made an immediate impact as a true freshman at Georgia and continued to get better. He battled through some injuries during his tenure in college but was able to recover quickly and even rejoin the team last season. He lead the Bulldogs in receiving all three of his years in Athens and is already a capable run blocker as well.
Pick 11: LA Chargers in Trade with MINN Vikings
JC Latham- OT Alabama
6’6 342 lbs
Whether the Chargers trade back to #11 or stay put at #5 I think they most likely go Offensive Tackle. Harbaugh has always been open about how much he values the offensive line and the run game and he will have his choice from some good ones here. You can make the argument that LA desperately needs wide receiver help after losing both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in the offseason but as one person put it, “Harbaugh has never cared about wide receivers, why would he start now.” Harbaugh didn’t have big-time wide outs in his previous tenure in San Fran or even during his time at Michigan. JC Latham is a huge lineman at 6’6 342 lbs that can play both guard and tackle. Latham played right tackle at Alabama and taking him here allows Rashawn Slater to stay put on the left side.
Pick 12: Denver Broncos
Bo Nix- QB Oregon
6’2 216 lbs
One of the toughest choices in the first round comes here at 12 with the Denver Broncos. The Broncos need a quarterback, even with word out of Denver that they “really like” Jarret Stidham. I am not buying it... Things have not been smooth in Denver the previous two seasons and there’s no one specific area for the cause. Broncos could go a lot of different ways, including pass rush or defensive line which is also a huge need for Denver. It also wouldn’t surprise me if they traded down with one of the teams looking to get up, including the Eagles. Bo Nix has fans in the Denver front office and some have labeled Nix as the perfect quarterback for Sean Payton. This is too rich for me at 12 but Sean Payton will do what he wants and he does need a quarterback. If it is not here, expect Denver to trade out or even back into the late first round to get one if either Penix or Nix is there later. I am just not sure Denver will risk losing out on a QB I hear they like with 61 career starts in college.
Pick 13: Las Vegas Raiders
Michael Penix Jr- QB Washington
6’3 213 lbs
The Raiders QB room consists of Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew but Las Vegas is still in the QB market. Head Coach Antonio Pierce was on the coaching staff at Arizona State when Jayden Daniels was the starter before he transferred to LSU. Rumors have linked the two together once again as the Raiders have been working the phones to try and get up to select Daniels but seems very unlikely with what it would cost to pass up a QB-needy team like Washington. So they stay put here and select my fourth-ranked passer in the class Michael Penix Jr. Penix had a phenomenal two years at Washington since transferring from Indiana. Penix is great in the pocket and has very good vision to see down the field. His biggest trait is his cannon of an arm and his lightning-quick release reminds me of Michael Vick in the way the ball explodes off his hand. He was criticized for his injury history at Indiana, which included two ACLs and a shoulder issue. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the medical has not been an issue for teams during the draft process so this seems like a good spot for the 2023 Heisman Runner-Up.
Pick 14: New Orleans Saints
Tagliese Fuaga- OT Oregon State
6’6 324 lbs
There might not be a bigger need in the first round than the Saints needing an Offensive Tackle. Trevor Penning hasn't panned out just yet and Ryan Ramczyk continues to deal with injuries. Not to mention the surprising retirement of versatile lineman James Hurst this week has the Saints even more desperate to fill the void. The best option for that is Taliese Fuaga. Fuaga is a mauler and a hyper-aggressive tackle. He can finish his blocks and has great strength to fend off the rush. Lacks a little speed and bend but at that size and his athleticism he's a perfect fit for what the Saints need.
Pick 15: Indianapolis Colts
Terrion Arnold- CB Alabama
6’0 189 lbs
The Colts are in the market for a corner and can stay put and get the besy in the draft, in my opinion, in Terrion Arnold from Alabama. Arnold was a Freshman All-American last season and a First-Team All-American this past season at Alabama. He can play in any coverage and excels in press-man. He had 6 interceptions, 20 breakups, and QBs only completed 43.7% of their passes when nearest defender and he allowed just 4 catches over 20 yards last season. Would probably be higher if he did not run a 4.52 but I don't see that as a problem for Arnold who has terrific game speed.
Pick 16: Seattle Seahawks
Troy Fautanu- OL Washington
6’4 317 lbs
Troy Fautanu is one of my favorite linemen in the draft. He was versatile at Washington playing 113 snaps at Guard while also mainly playing Left Tackle where he allowed only two sacks and 25 total pressures in 28 starts. He has above-average arm length and a low center of gravity. He can work up the field and is strong enough to hold his own in pass protection. Now with his former offensive line coach in Seattle with former offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, they could be looking to add a Washington Huskie to the Seahawks. One person close to Washington called Fautanu his favorite player to ever wear the Huskie jersey for the University.
Pick 17: Jacksonville Jaguars
Quinyon Mitchell- CB Toledo
6’0 195 lbs
Jacksonville lost Darious Williams to free agency this offseason and cornerback is a glaring need for the Jaguars ahead of the 2024 season. They did sign 30-year-old veteran Ronald Darby but that’s not enough to solidify the position. Quinyon Mitchell, is labeled by some, as the best possible cornerback in this draft. He has size and speed and made plays all over the field, including on special teams. He had a very impressive Senior Bowl where teams finally got to see him against some better competition and he was lights out. I like Arnold better but a big-time pick for Jacksonville if he is still on the board here at 17.
Pick 18: Cincinnati Bengals
Byron Murphy III- DT Texas
6’1 297 lbs
One consistent pick I have had throughout the process has been Texas DT Byron Murphy III to the Bengals. Now the Bengals could go in a different direction, wide receiver and offensive line are also needs for Cincinnati. But after losing Dj reader to Detroit in Free Agency they can get another force in the middle of that defense. Murphy was great at Texas and stunned Indy when he ran a 4.87 forty at 300 pounds. Shorter at just 6’0 but he is quick, powerful, and improved during his time at Texas.
Pick 19: Los Angeles Rams
Laiatu Latu- Edge UCLA
6’5 259 lbs
I think GM Les Snead would love to look up and see UCLA Edge rusher Laiatu Latu on the board when they pick at 19. Latu is arguably the best pass rusher in the class. He has an array of moves and an unmatched football IQ. the issue with Latu is the medical. He medically retired after multiple neck injuries during his time at Washington and couldn't get cleared to return to play. He transferred to UCLA and was cleared ranking first in the FBS in total pressures (55) and pressure percentage (19.1%), and his 10.5 sacks ranked ninth. He was just as good in 2023. During the regular season, he ranked first in pressure percentage (20.1%) and pressures (56) and was fourth in sacks (13).
Pick 20: Pittsburgh Steelers
Olu Fashanu- OT Penn State
6’6 312 lbs
Steelers are once again searching for an Offensive Tackle this season after selecting Broderick Jones from Georgia last year. Or could they be thinking wide receiver after trading Diontae Johnson to the Panthers and cutting Allen Robinson? In this case they go with the best tackle left on board in Olu Fashanu. Fashanu would have potentially been a top-10 pick had he come out after last season. He decided to come back to Penn State to polish up his game and I do think he got better. He has all the traits to be a successful tackle in the NFL but may need a little more time then some of his peers in this offensive line class. Steelers would love Fashanu at 20 if he does slip that much tonight.
My pick for Pittsburgh here personally would be Brian Thomas Jr. One of my favorite players in the draft who has size and speed. He led the FBS with 17 Touchdowns last season and would be a great target for Wilson or Fields as soon as next season.
Pick 21: Miami Dolphins
Graham Barton- Center/ Tackle Duke
6’5 313 lbs
Miami could go Offensive or Defensive line here. The Dolphins lost a plethora of talent on the defensive line and I could see them taking Jared Verse from FSU, or Defensive tackle Jer’zhan Newton from Illinois. But here I have them going with Graham Barton from Duke. With word in Miami they are working to extend Tua, the most important thing is his health. We have seen what can happen to Tua and the Dolphins when they can’t keep him upright and Barton would be a huge help upfront. He played Center as a freshman at Duke then Left tackle for his final 3 seasons in Durham. He most likely can take over for Robert Hunt at Center who left during Free Agency.
Pick 22: Philadelphia Eagles
Amarius Mims- OT Georgia
6’8 340 lbs
One of the biggest mysteries in the draft is Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims. Mims is still very raw as a prospect, having only played 800 career snaps in 8 starts for the former national champions. He has sky-high potential and with Jeff Stoutland's track record in Philly with the offensive line, Mims could turn into Lane Johnsons replacement for the future. Another Bulldog to the Eagles in round one.
Recent intel makes it likely the Eagles will move up tonight. Howie Roseman has been described as “calling every team ahead of him” so we will see if he can get whoever he has his eyes on this year. He has moved in 4 of the last 5 drafts to get “his guy.”
Pick 23: Minnesota Vikings
Jared Verse- Edge Florida Sate
6’4 254 lbs
Jared Verse is someone I have moved up my board as I watched more tape. Verse is big, athletic, and fast, producing at both Albany and Florida State. He is twitchy with very good hands and a strong burst. Losing Danielle Hunter to Houston in Free Agency makes this an easier move if Verse is still on the board.
Pick 24: Dallas Cowboys
Tyler Guyton- OT Oklahoma
6’8 322 lbs
The Cowboys can stay put and fill a much-needed void by selecting Tyler Guyton from Oklahoma. Guyton is one of the few remaining tackles left on the board with a first-round grade and he can stay relatively close to Norman now heading to Dallas. Guyton, still a little raw, has great size at 6’8. He was a big 12 Honorable Mention this past season. The Cowboys lost three offensive linemen at the start of the offseason and now can replenish a bit here with Guyton.
Pick 25: Green Bay Packers
Cooper Dujean- DB Iowa
6’0.5 203 lbs
The Packers pick up much-needed secondary help at pick 25 with Iowa defensive back Cooper Dujean. Dujean is an ultra-athlete who can play safety or corner in the NFL depending on the team and scheme. In 2022 he had five interceptions, returning three for touchdowns, Dujean was so talented the team tried to use him on offense, until he broke his leg at a practice in November. He is now cleared and ready to go for football activities. Dujean was huge in the return game as well and can immediately contribute on special teams. The question will be where will he play for the team that drafts him, corner or safety?
Pick 26: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Chop Robinson- Edge Penn State
6’3 254 lbs
Chop Robinson finished with just 11.5 sacks in 34 career games but you can see the potential on tape. He has the quickest first step of any rusher in the class and combines that with an explosive burst around the edge. He ran a 4.48 forty and a 1.54 10-yard split, fantastic numbers showing his speed and ability to change direction. He will be a better pro then college football player. Gets his nickname “Chop” from Porkchop, as he weighed 11 pounds at birth.
Pick 27: Arizona Cardinals
Kool-Aid Mckinistry- CB Alabama
5’11.5 199 lbs
There has been a lot of talk about Kool-Aid lately and could definitely see him going higher, even in a great class of corners. Nick Saban has apparently been preaching about him to teams and some are really said to like him. But here its the Cardinals getting him in the late first round. Mckinstry was a top prospect out of high school and 3 year starter at Alabama. Kool-Aid had 20 breakups the last two seasons and is smooth/veratile in coverage.
Pick 28: Buffalo Bills
AD Mitchell- WR Texas
6’2 205 lbs
Buffalo gets a much needed playmaker in Brian Thomas Jr at pick #28. Buffalo decided to move on from Stefon Diggs, moving him to Houston a few weeks ago. The wide receiver room consists of starters Curtis Samual, Khalil Shakur and Mack Hollins. Josh Allen will need another playmaker. One of my favorite players in the draft who has size and speed. He led the FBS with 17 Touchdowns last season. Recent medical coming up has raised some eyebrows for Thomas Jr, some teams flagging him as potentially needing shoulder surgery next year. Well, if he falls he would be an absolute steal for the Bills. I love the pairing of Thomas Jr with Josh Allen in Buffalo.
Pick 29: Detriot Lions
Darius Robinson- DL Missouri
6’5 285 lbs
The Lions stay put after rumors of potentially trading up and get the hometown kid in Darius Robinson. He started his career as a defensive tackle at Mizzou and transformed his body to get more speed. He ran a 4.95 forty at the combine and with his power and motor could be a huge addition opposite of Aidan Hutchinson. Robinson had a great Senior Bowl week in Mobile and has risen up draft boards. Robinson grew up in Michigan a Lions’ fan and now has the chance to help out his favorite franchise.
Pick 30: Baltimore Ravens
Nate Wiggins- CB Clemson
6’1 175 lbs
Wiggins was a first-team ACC corner in 2023 and you won’t find a faster defensive back. Wiggins ran a lightning-fast 4.28 forty at the combine and paired with his height & length could be a perfect recipe for a defensive coordinator on the outside. The issue with Wiggins is durability and ball skills. He has a small frame at 175 pounds and only had 3 career interceptions, dropping a handful of them. If he can fix those things, get stronger and a haul in some picks he could have a nice career in the right scheme.
Pick 31: San Francisco 49ers
Xavier Worthy- WR Texas
5’11 165 lbs
Add another weapon to San Franciso if Worthy is on the board at 31. Worthy broke the combine record for the forty, running it in 4.21 seconds. He improved his hands at Texas after dropping too many balls in 2022. Worthy is more then a track star, he is a football player. He is a better route runner then given credit for and can be ultra-dynamic on special teams. His explosiveness combined with his speed and route running ability willmake him dangerous to opposing defenses. He can take the top off, dare I say, Tyreek Hill esque?
Pick 32: Kansas City Chiefs
AD Mitchell- WR Texas
6’2 205 lbs
It seems like the Chiefs might not need receivers after all the way Patrick Mahomes went back to back but lets make it easier for the best quarterback in the league. Mitchell scored 5 touchdowns in his 5 college football playoff games at Georgia and Texas, showcasing his big game ability. He has size at 6’2 205 pounds and ran a 4.34 to go with it at the Combine in March. Could be an immediate big time playmaker for Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.
